The Spiritual Heartland

Bumthang

HIGHLIGHT

Often called the “Switzerland of Bhutan,” Bumthang is a complex of four valleys—Chokhor, Tang, Ura, and Chumey—that form the cultural and religious heart of the nation. With more ancient temples and sacred sites than any other district, it is the birthplace of Buddhism in Bhutan.

What's the Place like?

Bumthang Feels like a step back in time. The air is thin and pure, the landscapes are a blend of rolling hills and dense coniferous forests, and the history is palpable. This is where Guru Rinpoche first brought Buddhism to Bhutan and where the great Tibetan saint Pema Lingpa left his legacy. The region is also famous for its production of honey, cheese, and the distinctive Bumthang woolen goods known as yathra. A journey to Bumthang is a pilgrimage into the soul of the nation.

Where to visit in Bumthang

  • Jambay Lhakhang & Kurjey Lhakhang: Two of the most sacred temples. Jambay Lhakhang is one of the 108 temples built by King Songtsen Gampo in a single day. Kurjey Lhakhang is built around a cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated and left his body imprint on the rock.
  • Tamshing Lhakhang: This monastery houses some of the oldest wall paintings in Bhutan and was founded by Pema Lingpa. Visitors can participate in a unique tradition of carrying a heavy iron chain mail worn by the saint.
  • Mebar Tsho (The Burning Lake): A serene but powerful pilgrimage site. It is not a lake but a deep pool in the river where Pema Lingpa discovered sacred treasures hidden by Guru Rinpoche. The waters are illuminated by butter lamps, creating a mystical atmosphere.
  • Ura Valley: The highest of Bumthang’s valleys, Ura features a unique village with stone-roofed houses and a charming cobblestone street. It offers a more remote and traditional experience.
  • Bumthang Brewery & Cheese Factory: A surprising and delightful stop! Taste local beers and spirits and sample Swiss-style cheese, a legacy of Bhutan’s first development project in the 1960s.

When to visit Bumthang

  • Autumn (September – November): The best time. The skies are clear, the air is crisp, and the famous Jambay Lhakhang Drup festival with its unique “naked dance” usually takes place in October/November.
  • Spring (March – May): Another wonderful season, with pleasant weather and beautiful wildflowers covering the valleys.
  • Summer (June – August): The monsoon season, but Bumthang, being in the east, receives less rain than the west. It’s a good time for trekking.
  • Winter (December – February): Very cold, with temperatures often well below freezing and frequent snowfall, which can sometimes block the high mountain passes leading in and out.
