Phobjikha

The Valley of the Cranes

HIGHLIGHT

Venture to the heart of central Bhutan to discover the breathtaking Phobjikha Valley, a wide, glacial valley cherished for its pristine ecology and as the winter home of the endangered Black-necked Cranes.

What's the Place like?

Phobjikha Valley is a place of exceptional, quiet beauty. Unlike the steep valleys of Paro and Thimphu, Phobjikha is a broad, U-shaped valley carpeted in dwarf bamboo. It is a protected conservation area, free of power lines to protect the majestic Black-necked Cranes that migrate here every winter. The valley is centered around the Gangtey Monastery and offers a chance to experience rural, high-altitude Bhutanese life at its most tranquil and authentic.

Where to visit in Phobjikha

  •  Gangtey Monastery (Gangtey Goenpa): A leading Nyingma school monastery that sits on a small hill overlooking the entire Phobjikha Valley. The monastery is a major religious center and its presence adds to the valley’s spiritual aura.
  • Black-necked Crane Information Center: Learn about these elegant and endangered birds through telescopes and exhibits. The center plays a vital role in the community’s conservation efforts.
  • Gangtey Nature Trail: This beautiful, gentle hike is one of the most scenic walks in Bhutan. It starts at the Gangtey Monastery and descends through forests of blue pine and meadows to the valley floor, offering stunning views throughout.
  • Phobjikha Valley Village Life: Interact with the local farmers and explore the traditional villages. The valley is a wonderful place for photography, bird watching, and simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.
  • Wangdue Phodrang Dzong: While tragically largely destroyed by a fire in 2012, the dzong is undergoing reconstruction. The original site, perched on a strategic ridge at the confluence of two rivers, remains an impressive sight.
