Thimphu

The Charming Capital

HIGHLIGHT

As the world’s only capital city without a traffic light, Thimphu is a captivating blend of the ancient and the contemporary. This unique city, set in a winding valley, is the bustling heart of Bhutan’s government, religion, and commerce, all while fiercely preserving its cultural identity.

What's the Place like?

Thimphu is a city of charming contradictions. Monks in maroon robes check their smartphones, while traditional architecture is mandated by law, creating a strikingly uniform and beautiful cityscape. It is a place where you can witness a centuries-old archery match and later browse trendy local art galleries. As the nation's hub, Thimphu offers a deep dive into modern Bhutanese life while providing easy access to spiritual sites and pristine nature just beyond the city limits.

Where to visit in Thimphu

  • Tashichho Dzong (The Fortress of the Glorious Religion): The magnificent seat of Bhutan’s government and the Central Monastic Body. Its golden roofs and whitewashed walls set against the backdrop of the evening sky are a sight to behold.
  • Buddha Dordenma: A colossal, 169-foot-tall golden Buddha statue overlooking the valley. The statue houses over 125,000 smaller Buddha statues, and the viewpoint offers a panoramic vista of Thimphu.
  • Motithang Takin Preserve: See Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin—a unique creature that looks like a goat-antelope hybrid. The preserve was established after the King decreed these rare animals could not be kept in captivity in the city.
  • National Memorial Chorten: This iconic white-domed stupa is the spiritual heart of the city. Join locals in a clockwise circumambulation to feel the pulse of daily faith and devotion.
  • Simply Bhutan & The Folk Heritage Museum: Excellent living museums that offer interactive experiences of traditional Bhutanese life, architecture, and customs.
