Punakha

The Former Capital of Bliss

HIGHLIGHT

Once the winter capital of Bhutan, Punakha is a serene, subtropical valley where two rivers converge. Renowned for its stunning dzong, fertile farmland, and gentle climate, it is often considered one of the most beautiful regions in the country.

What's the Place like?

Punakha's lower altitude brings a warmer, more languid atmosphere compared to Thimphu and Paro. The valley is a picturesque tapestry of terraced rice fields, orange groves, and purple jacaranda trees, all dominated by the majestic Punakha Dzong at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (Male) and Mo Chhu (Female) rivers. This was the seat of Bhutan's government until the 1950s and remains the winter residence of the Central Monastic Body, making it a place of immense historical and spiritual significance.

Where to visit in Punakha

  • Punakha Dzong: Arguably the most beautiful dzong in Bhutan. Its towering white walls and golden spires, reflected in the tranquil waters of the river, create a scene of pure magic. The dzong’s history, housing sacred relics and hosting the coronation of kings, is equally impressive.
  • Chimi Lhakhang: Also known as the “Temple of Fertility,” this unique monastery is dedicated to Drukpa Kunley, the “Divine Madman.” The short, beautiful hike through rice fields and villages to reach it is a highlight.
  • Punakha Suspension Bridge: One of the longest suspension bridges in Bhutan, spanning the Po Chhu River. Walking across this bridge offers thrilling views of the river below and the valley, with its prayer flags fluttering in the wind.
  • Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten: A beautifully intricate chorten perched on a hilltop. The hour-long hike to reach it rewards you with stunning, panoramic views of the Punakha valley.
  • Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu River Rafting: A gentle and scenic way to experience the valley, offering a unique perspective of the dzong and the surrounding countryside.
